Labuschagne Omitted from Australia's One-Day International Team to Face India

Labuschagne finds himself omitted from the three-game ODI series facing India, with high-performing Queensland teammate Matt Renshaw receiving a surprise call-up.

Performance Issues Result in Omission

Labuschagne has been omitted from the one-day international side following managing only a single run in each of his two innings during the recent series against South Africa in August. Labuschagne has a highest score of forty-seven in his last 10 ODI batting appearances.

Labuschagne has played 68 ODIs and amassed 1,871 runs at an batting average of 34.64, but will now focus on earning a Test team comeback ahead of the Ashes starting in Perth on November 21.

Renshaw's Return and Team Changes

There have been indications of a resurgence with 160 for Queensland in the domestic first-class competition this week, while Renshaw made a century for the Bulls in the same game against Tasmania.

Renshaw is in line to make his ODI debut in the forthcoming series against India after last being included in an ODI squad in 2022.

He has played 14 Tests with the most recent appearance in India in 2023 but is also seeking a Test return as Australia seek a fix to their top-order woes.

Bowling Returns and Injury News

Left-arm quick Mitchell Starc returns for the ODI series against India after taking a break since performing well for Australia in the 3-0 Test series sweep of West Indies in July.

BBL performer Mitch Owen could make his ODI debut after being concussed in the build-up to Australia’s most recent 50-over series against South Africa.

ODI captain Pat Cummins is still unavailable as he aims to recover from a back injury in time to captain Australia in the opening Test of the Ashes in November.

Squad Selection Approach and Fixtures

Australia have named a squad for only the first two T20s against India with the upcoming Ashes series, although Glenn Maxwell will be absent for the five-game T20 series due to a wrist problem suffered in New Zealand.

Mitch Marsh will skipper both the ODI and T20 sides after hitting a ton in the last match against New Zealand to secure a series clean sweep last week.

“We have named a squad for the ODI series and initial two matches of the T20 series as there will be rotation through the back end of the series as players get ready for the cricket season through domestic first-class matches,” selection chief George Bailey said.
“The majority of the T20 squad will stay as a group as it’s an crucial phase in the build towards the World Cup next year, however we are trying to strike a balance to ensure we simultaneously get ready specific players for the Test series ahead.”

Australia’s three-match ODI series against India commences on October 19 in Perth, before the opponents play five T20s from October 29.
