Formula 1 racer Liam Lawson disclosed he narrowly avoided a potentially deadly accident during Sunday's Mexico City Grand Prix when two marshals darted across the track immediately ahead of his car

The alarming incident happened on the third lap when marshals were seen on the track as Lawson was returning to the race following an premature pit stop to swap his broken nose section

Immediately after, Racing Bulls driver Lawson communicated to his pit wall engineer saying: "You've got to be joking? Did you witness that? I could have... killed them"

"I honestly couldn't believe what I was observing"

"I came out on a new set of hards, and then I arrived at Turn One and unexpectedly appeared two dudes sprinting across the track"

"I almost collided with one of them, truthfully, it was extremely hazardous"

Formula 1's governing body, the International Automobile Federation (FIA), is currently investigating the events

"After an occurrence at turn one, race control was advised that fragments were located on the track at the critical section of that bend" stated the regulatory authority

"During the third lap, marshals were alerted and put on alert to go onto the racing surface and recover the debris once the entire field had cleared the area"

"The moment it was realized that Lawson had pitted, the orders to send marshals were canceled and a safety warning flag was shown in that area"
